Part 2: Individualized Practicum Learning Objectives
Objective 1: To develop application level knowledge and skills in assessing, diagnosing, and recommending pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatment plans for the patients by the end of the practicum experience
Planned Activities:
One of the planned activities is participating actively in patient assessment to develop competencies in diagnosing and planning the desired treatment plans. I will also seek assistance from my preceptor and other staffs on issues related to pharmacological and psychological management of mental health problems. I will also read extensively on the pharmacological and psychological treatments used in the management of different mental health problems. I will also follow-up patients to determine the effectiveness of the treatments that I adopt for them. Follow-up will enable me to revise the treatment plans to ensure that they promote optimum recovery, health and wellbeing.

Objective 2: To develop application level knowledge and skills in the use of screening tools to diagnose patients’ problems by the end of the practicum experience
Planned Activities:
I will use different tools of screening patients to determine their accuracy in practice. I will also work in collaboration with other healthcare providers in using different screening tools in psychiatric practice. I will also research of the various tools that are used in the organization to diagnose patients and guide in the development of treatment plans.

I will also offer comprehensive health education to patients and their significant others to increase their level of awareness and empower them with the knowledge and skills needed for the effective management of their health problems. I will also participate in community outreach programs that aim at creating awareness in the community about health problems, including psychiatric conditions.

Nursing Theory and Counseling Theory
A nursing theory that would guide my practice in psychotherapy is self-care theory by Dorothea Orem. Orem asserted that the role of nurses in healthcare is to assist patients in achieving their self-care needs. Nurses assess patients to determine their needs, ability to meet them, and develop plans of care to ensure that the needs are addressed (Ali, 2018; Martínez et al., 2021). Patients suffering from mental health problems often have self-care deficits. Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners are positioned to assist patients in managing and coping with the demands of their mental health problems. In doing so, they utilize the concepts of self-care theory by Dorothea Orem.
The counseling theory that I would use to guide my practice in psychotherapy is cognitive theory of counseling. Cognitive theory of counseling asserts that individuals develop mental health problems due to emotional and psychological difficulties in thinking and synchronizing with reality. The difficulties cause distorted thinking, which affects the functioning, health and wellbeing of an individual. The mental health problems can therefore be resolved by challenging the false thinking and beliefs that clients have towards themselves and their environment (Alfaiz, 2018; Guerrero, 2018). The theory will be applied in managing mental health problems using interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy.
