NURS 6050 Discussion: Transforming Nursing and Healthcare through Technology
Discussion: Healthcare Information Technology Trends
Throughout history, technological advancements have appeared for one purpose before finding applications elsewhere that lead to spikes in its usage and development. The internet, for example, was originally developed to share research before becoming a staple of work and entertainment. But technology—new and repurposed—will undoubtedly continue to be a driver of healthcare information. Informaticists often stay tuned to trends to monitor what the next new technology will be or how the next new idea for applying existing technology can benefit outcomes.

Our healthcare organizations have been using Spruce Health, a technology whose main aim is to protect messaging and phone calls within the healthcare organization. The technology’s main aim is to ensure efficient and effective workflows that lead to fast responses once the patient calls for help. The best thing about the technology is that it is one of those technologies that are compliant with the 1996 Act concerning the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (Spruce Health, n.d).
From what I have observed from our healthcare organization, the main issue that Spruce Health technology has had concerns its connectivity issue. For instance, there are many times when healthcare professionals have been unable to send messages, including other factors like interrupted calls, hanging networks, or dropping calls. For instance, if a call concerning a critically ill patient dropped, if the nurse did not rush to the unit without full information, the patient’s health would have been in great danger. However, the situation was critical since it would have been too late if the caller needed various equipment to stabilize the patient’s condition. Another issue associated with the technologies of such type is insufficient skills by the healthcare providers to operate the system. As one of the requirements when incorporating technological systems, workshops and training are essential to ensure that the healthcare providers familiarize themselves with these systems to be competent and achieve the intended goal (Sujan et al., 2020).
One benefit healthcare organizations derive from telehealth and Spruce Health technologies is that healthcare providers can easily engage in healthcare exchange interoperability, thus promoting healthcare even in remote areas using telemedicine (Mataxen & Webb, 2019). However, the most common risk is a data breach which occurs when a third party discloses patient information or through cyber-attacks when individuals with ill motives hack the healthcare systems. Of all technologies, telehealth is the most promising technology since it helps in improving patient outcomes like in monitoring patient medication and increases chances for evidence-based research for different illnesses.
