Health organizations exist as social systems with individuals from diverse backgrounds that provide input for the realization of the desired outcomes. Leadership is an essential component that determines how professionals work to deliver optimum patient and organizational outcomes. Effective leadership styles have been shown to motivate organizational stakeholders to implement strategic initiatives that drive continuous quality improvement. Therefore, this paper is an annotated bibliography of the impact of leadership styles on staff satisfaction and patient outcomes.

The above study is a systematic review that identified and analyzed knowledge present to date on the correlation between nurses’ job satisfaction and leadership styles. The study results showed the existence of a significant correlation between leadership style and nurses’ job satisfaction. Transformational leadership was associated with the highest number of positive correlations followed by authentic, resonant, and servant leadership styles. A negative correlation between leadership style and nurses’ job satisfaction was seen in laissez-faire and passive-avoidant leadership styles. Transactional style showed both positive and negative correlation. This study shows the impact of nursing leadership on staff satisfaction. I will incorporate the resource information into the literature review to support the need for my project.

The above study is an integrative study that assessed the impact of transformational leadership on nurses’ job satisfaction. A literature search was performed on databases that included CINAHL, MEDLINE, PubMed, Research4Life, Web of Science, and APA PsychInfo. Results from 17 articles showed a positive influence of transformational leadership on nurses’ job satisfaction. The results also revealed that transformational leadership has a positive impact on the quality of care, intentions to stay at work, and patient outcomes. This study supports the topic focus by showing the positive effect of transformational leadership on staff satisfaction and care outcomes. I will incorporate the study findings into the problem statement and literature review of the project.

The results also revealed that the main influencing leadership styles include transformation and authentic leadership styles. This study is relevant to my project focus by showing the positive impact of nursing leadership on nursing outcomes. The study findings will inform the needs of my project.

The results revealed thatthe transactional leadership style was positively associated with emotional exhaustion while the transformational leadership style was negatively associated with emotional exhaustion and depersonalization and positively associated with personal accomplishment. Nurse tenure did not have a significant effect on the association. The above multicenter cross-sectional analysis explored leadership styles and outcomes of directors of nursing and head nurses in nursing homes based on defined leadership concepts. The results obtained from 302 nursing home staff revealed that head nurses and directors of nursing scored significantly lower on transactional and transformational leadership styles and significantly higher on passive-avoidant leadership styles. All the leadership outcomes were significantly lower for the head nurses and statistically insignificant for directors of nursing. The study is relevant because it predicts the negative effect of passive-avoidant leadership styles on nursing and patient outcomes. The study results will be used to develop the project problem statement and literature review.
Conclusion
The paper has explored the impact of nursing leadership on nurses’ satisfaction and patient outcomes. The studies reveal that transformational and authentic leadership styles are mostly associated with positive outcomes. The articles are relevant to the proposed topic. They will inform proposal development.
