NUR 513 Assignment: Worldview and Nursing Process Personal Statement

 Topic 4 DQ 1

Orem’s Self Care Theory and Watson’s Theory of Human Caring are just but two of the many nursing theories that provide a framework and models for understanding and approaching nursing care (Khademian, Kazemi et al., 2020). The Self Care Theory is based on the concept that patients heal better when they have adequate independence over their self-care. Similarly, the Theory of Human Caring posits that caring has a healing potential because it can regenerate life’s energies. One of the similarities between the two theories is that they both describe four elements that encompass care, which are nursing, human, surrounding, and health (Gunawan et al., 2022). The second similarity between the two theories is that they share close definitions of health and nursing. For instance, health is defined as physical, psychological, and social functioning. Likewise, nursing is considered a discipline that provides care, upholds health, and prevents sickness.

Furthermore, the two theories have differences in the application and extent of use. According to Watson, the surroundings as an existing culture related to caring for a patient. On the other hand, Orem concentrates on explaining the characteristic of an individual described as requiring special care, appreciation, adequate support, and respect. The intent of Watson’s theory is to promote caring through interpersonal connection. The goal of the theory is to ensure that nurses provide effective care, which promotes the health of a person and supports family growth. The nursing theory is applicable in many settings including nursing practice and nursing education. The intent of Orem’s theory is to promote self-care, which is an individual’s ability to initiate and perform activities to improve their health outcomes (Tang, Chen et al., 2022). The theory is mostly applied to patients with chronic conditions. Apart from nursing practice, Orem’s theory is applied in nursing education and research. Hence, both theories have a wide scope of application within the clinical environment and beyond.

Topic 4 DQ2

Imogene King’s Goal Attainment Theory describes how patients attain personal goals amidst the dynamics of interpersonal relationships and other factors that influence goal attainment (Park, 2021). The theory is essential for patient care and I would use it to provide patient education for patients that need lifestyle modification. For example, a patient who has been diagnosed with diabetes requires a change in diet and lifestyle to manage the condition and minimize the risk of complications. Behavioral change is very difficult and requires a person to set goals. The theory is used to encourage clients to stay consistent with their goals and identify barriers that might impede goal attainment, for example, time, space, or stress. The advantage of the Goal Attainment Theory is easy to understand because of the absence of illogical steps (Park, 2021). Moreover, the concepts presented by the theory have evidentiary support; hence credibility and a higher rate of success. The limitations of the theory are that it cannot be applied in situations where the patient is unable to interact with the nurse and its scope of application is not extended to groups and families.

The Health Promotion Model is another nursing theory that supports effective patient care. The model posits that health is more than just healing from sickness, but involves mental, physical, and social (DeNisco & Barker, 2021). The model provides a framework for assisting healthcare providers to deliver impactful patient education by exploring the benefits versus risks of certain behavior such as smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, or alcohol abuse. People will tend to change their behavior if they perceive a benefit from that move or positive reward, or understand that failure to change can have severe consequences. The strength of the theory is that it allows a provider to assess the patient’s feelings to understand their motivation and dedication to behavior change (Chen & Hsieh, 2021). The theory is also straightforward to apply to both individuals and groups. The limitation of the theory is that it depends on the willingness of an individual to change. Moreover, its application in acute settings is limited because of time and resource restrictions. Finally, both theories do not draw any ethical issues in the application.
