Public health emergencies and threats such as the COVID-19 pandemic adversely affect communities. The COVID-19 pandemic has associated various economic, social, and health negative effects such as increased unemployment, reduced productivity, persistent social conflicts, psychological distress, and increased morbidity and mortality from the disease (Rela et al., 2022). This has led to reduced quality of life and challenging livelihoods, especially among the vulnerable population. The current community data on the COVID-19 status has slightly changed as compared to week 1. The number of confirmed positive cases is 120 which indicates a 20% decrease in incidence. There are 5 hospital admissions with no patients currently admitted to the intensive care unit. Only 2 mortalities were attributed to the disease. These findings indicate a decrease in the disease burden and infection rates. This may be credited to improved adherence to the mitigation strategies put in place to combat the spread of the pandemic. The absence of a reopening surge may further support the reopening plan through an additional easing of the restriction measures.

Reopening and the return to normalcy necessitate strategies to enhance community resilience. Recurrent spikes in the transmission rates may impede progressive reopening with a resultant return to previous restriction measures. Community engagement and participation through collaboration with key stakeholders such as local authorities, community leaders, individual members, community-based organizations, and healthcare providers is fundamental (Gilmore et al., 2020). Active community involvement results in collective responsibility with better implementation outcomes. Currently, there is a marked reduction in the incidence of positive cases and COVID-19-related deaths. This may be attributed to the successful adoption of the mitigation strategies with consequent good implications on reopening measures.

Preventive measures are still pivotal in further reducing the positivity rate. Strategies that can be promoted by community stakeholders include promotion of community awareness, proper risk communication, management of retrogressive misconceptions and misinformation on matters regarding the pandemic, and training and capacity building (Adebisi et al., 2021). The community should also be informed on the safety, efficacy, and benefits of equitably available vaccines to enhance uptake (Rela et al., 2022). Fostering individual and community commitment to collective responsibility in adhering to recommended mitigation measures is also important.
