For instance, implementing mandatory maximum patient-to-nurse ratios as a state legal requirement and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) establishing hospital safe-staffing ratios at the federal level are policy strategies that can help address the crisis. Through these policy directives, healthcare organizations will develop internal policies and strategies to meet the set legal mandates at the state and federal levels, including innovative ways to recruit and retain nurses.
