Biological Basis and Ethical/Legal Considerations of Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy is a non-pharmacological intervention used in psychiatry with a biological basis. Firstly, psychotherapy stimulates the release of neurotransmitters in the brain, which helps improve mental health status. Studies have shown that psychotherapy stimulates the release of serotonin, which minimizes symptoms of major depression. Psychotherapy also regulates hormones associated with stress response. Psychotherapy techniques such as mindfulness practice reduce the release of stress hormones such as cortisol. As a result, it reduces the severity of depressive symptoms among patients with mood disorders. Psychotherapy facilitates the acquisition of new skills and behaviors among psychiatric patients (Bertolín-Guillén, 2024). This process facilitates the development of new neural circuits that support new behaviors that minimize the symptoms of mental health problems.

Culture, religion, and socioeconomics might influence one’s perspective on the value of psychotherapy treatments. Cultural values, beliefs, and practices influence how communities perceive mental health problems and treatments. Cultures where mental health patients are stigmatized might have low utilization rates of psychotherapy since patients might rely on other alternatives such as traditional medicine for mental health treatment (Gonzalez et al., 2022). Religious beliefs and practices also affect one’s perspective on the value of psychotherapy treatments. Individuals who consider mental health problems from a spiritual perspective are least likely to place value on psychotherapy treatments. This is because they will utilize prayers and spiritual causes to treat their mental health problems. Socioeconomic factors such as educational level, income, and access to and availability of psychotherapy treatments also affect one’s perspective on the value of psychotherapy treatments (Boettcher et al., 2021). Patients from poor backgrounds might experience cost-related barriers in accessing psychotherapy treatments.
Legal and ethical considerations for group and family therapy differ from those of individual therapy. Individual therapy is associated with few ethical and legal concerns compared to family and group therapy. Therapists encounter minimal challenges such as threats to confidentiality and privacy of information. However, working with families or groups is associated with challenges such as conflicting goals, expectations, and threats to data integrity. Therefore, these differences will increase the need for strategies such as seeking informed consent, educating participants on the importance of data integrity, and respecting diversity when working with individuals, families, and groups (Avasthi et al., 2022). This paper has used scholarly resources. They are related to psychotherapy use in mental health and were published by experts with extensive experience in psychiatric nursing.

Biological Basis and Ethical/Legal Considerations of Psychotherapy
Many studies have found that psychotherapy is as effective as psychopharmacology in terms of influencing changes in behaviors, symptoms of anxiety, and changes in mental state. Changes influenced by psychopharmacology can be explained by the biological basis of treatments. But how does psychotherapy achieve these changes? Does psychotherapy share common neuronal pathways with psychopharmacology?
Psychotherapy is used with individuals as well as in groups or families. The idea of discussing confidential information with a patient in front of an audience is probably quite foreign to you. However, in group and family therapy, this is precisely what the psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner does. In your role, learning how to provide this type of therapy within the limits of confidentiality is essential.
For this Discussion, you will consider whether psychotherapy also has a biological basis and analyze the ways in which legal and ethical considerations differ in the individual, family, and group therapy settings.
