NR 505 Week 7 Reflection on Learning MIMI

I have learned much about evidence-based practice (EBP) in nursing, particularly on managing chronic low back pain (CLBP) this week.  In exploring yoga therapy as a pharmacological intervention, I learned more about the increasingly prominent problem of CLBP, which affected 540 million people globally as of 2020, according to WHO (2020). I also discovered the demerits of the conventional form of CLBP treatment involving opioids, including addiction and other side effects (Pritchard et al., 2022). On the other hand, yoga therapy deals with not only the physical discomfort that the patient might be experiencing but also their psychological status. As mentioned by seasoned scholars, yoga therapy leads to a 30-40% decrease in pain and a 40% enhancement in mental health during a 12-week intervention (Kim, 2020; Roseen et al., 2021). This understanding has influenced my thinking regarding using traditional methods in managing conditions such as CLBP.

My week 7 findings would be best disseminated using professionally crafted presentations at a nursing conference. The most crucial aspect in ensuring my message is well communicated to the scientific society is utilizing appropriate fonts, messages, and colors when designing my presentation. Besides, I would use infographics, graphs, and tables to present key findings. I would also cite scholarly publications in expounding on my findings to ensure they are well founded and can be challenged or researched by others; in the same way, I cited the 30-40% pain relief and 40% mental health gain in yoga use (Kim, 2020; Roseen et al., 2021). Also, I would incorporate simple illustrations depicting the advantages of practicing yoga therapy as opposed to the traditional use of opioid drugs. This approach matches the goals of the patient-centered care that the nurse practitioners practice in the current practice setting. In general, this week’s knowledge enhanced my belief in incorporating the best practice models, strategies, and frameworks in nursing practice. It has also reinforced the concept of adequately communicating research findings that can lead to changes that will improve patient care.
