Epidemiology and Biostatistics
Biostatistics and epidemiology are essential concepts in scientific research whose findings significantly contribute to evidence-based practices and address various healthcare issues. Biostatistics is the application of statistical techniques to collect, analyze and interpret data from a given population during a clinical and translational research study in various fields (Torres et al., 2021). The statistical approach during statistical data collection and analysis should be quality, reproducible, and relates to the study design, hypothesis, and objectives (Ciolino et al., 2021). Biostatistics underpins population health research in various ways. These include the formation of the basis for understanding disease development, determination of the cause, assessment of strategic prevention and control measures, formulation of evidence-based interventions, and insights into population health and health inequality( Matranga et al., 2021). The findings from biostatistics can adequately guide health policies, health-related decision-making, and safety and quality improvement in healthcare.
Epidemiology is also integral to clinical research and the address of population health issues. Epidemiology is the scientific study of the determinants, occurrence, and distribution of diseases and health-related issues in a given population (Ahlbom et al., 2020). Epidemiology plays a role in the identification of the spread of diseases and potential mitigation strategies which is particularly important in epidemics and pandemics that pose public health threats. The trends obtained with inference to the general population can be used to disseminate information that potentially minimizes health risks and ill health. Findings will also guide policies and strategies to address gaps in population health disparities stemming from the differential determinants of health. This will be achieved through the translation of relevant research findings to practice through collaborative efforts among various stakeholders.
Biostatistical and epidemiological expertise is integral to my evidence-based practice proposal. My proposal highlight falls. Falls are a common experience that may be associated with detrimental effects such as disability, loss of independence, socioeconomic burden implications, and increased morbidity and mortality (Vaishya et al., 2020). Epidemiology and biostatistics will enable me to explore and understand various aspects of falls such as the predisposing factors, effects on the study population and resultant inference to the general population, and tailored preventive initiatives.
