Nurses are a vital component of the workforce and create the largest group of professionals. They are involved in the provision of quality healthcare services and aid in the enhancement of health outcomes for patients. One of the biggest issues facing nurses is the nurse shortage. The World Health Organization asserts that there is an estimated shortage of 7.2 million healthcare workers and is expected to grow to 12.9 by 2035 (Tamata & Mohammadnezhad, 2022). There are various factors contributing to the nurse shortage, especially in the United States. For instance, the growth of nursing school enrollment is not commensurate with the growing demands for nursing services. There is also a significant number of nurses nearing retirement age. It is also asserted that there are changing demographics such as the aging population necessitating more nurses to care for the population (AACN, 2022). Lastly, there are lack of appropriate regulations and policies to address the nurse shortage. These illustrate some of the factors contributing to the nurse shortage.
The essence of nursing forms the heart of the nursing profession. It illustrates how nurses are involved in satisfying the needs of others with kindness, compassion and expertise. The profession is beyond nursing tasks and responsibilities and involves unwavering commitment to caring for patients. The concept of essence nursing is in direct alignment with nursing leadership and empowerment. The leadership works to foster an environment that promotes ethical leadership (Klem, 2023). It also promotes trust among the nursing staff and empowers them to care for the patients and the community.
New nursing students have significant implications for the nursing profession. They are involved through active engagement and participation (Hudson et al., 2019). They also collaborate and work in teams to ensure quality provision of care services.
