1 Nursing vs. Computer Systems Analyst Description of 2 Careers Nursing is a broad range of career opportunities beginning at entre level professionals to doctoral level practitioners. Nurses work in the healthcare industry offering personalized care. Their primary responsibility include health promotion, disease prevention, and patient education. The scope of practice in nursing extends from independent practice, collaboration to home care (Registered Nurse (RN). n.d.). A computer system analyst is tasked with ensuring hardware, software, and all information system within an organization are working.

A computer system analyst’s works with stakeholders within an organization to identify weaknesses and strengths in the system and how to improve any shortcomings (Greenspan, n.d.). Describe Each Career in Detail Including Salary (Based In MD, VA, and DA Geographical Area), Education Level or Certification Needed, And Duties Nursing Although nurses can get an entry-level position as a registered nurse (RN) with a threeyear degree program, there are changing preferences in the industry requiring nurses to obtain Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) (Registered Nurse (RN). n.d.). Within Maryland, Virginia, and DC area, the median salary for a registered nurse with a diploma from a recognized nursing program, an associate’s degree or BSN is $73,000/year (Registered Nurse (RN). n.d.). RNs are responsible for providing and coordinating patient care. Employment projections for nurses are 18% in the next decades as more practitioners emphasize on preventive medicine, the aging population, and increase in chronic illnesses (Types of Nursing Careers & Specialties. 2 2020).

Depending on the specialization, nurses are required to obtain certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) (Types of Nursing Careers & Specialties. 2020). Computer System Analyst Computer system analysts’ work with managers and other computer end users to identify system needs, analyze computer systems and how to improve IT productivity. They are tasked with developing new applications and enhancing existing ones. Computer system analysts provide cost-benefit analyses of any new computer systems, train and orient end users on new systems, and help with implementation, customization, and troubleshooting (Greenspan, n.d.). The average salary is approximately $89,000. In DC, for instance, the average salary is $104,180.

Employers require that computer system analysts have a minimum of bachelor’s degree in computer systems analysis (Greenspan, n.d.). Other acceptable degrees include management information system (MIS), computer information system (CIS), and business intelligence among others. Considering the integration of IT and business, some employers require a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA). Computer system analysts can obtain certification from professional organizations or system manufacturers in specialties like CCT Data Center from Cisco Systems, Inc. among others (Greenspan, n.d.). Emerging Technology (Within the Past 5 Years) Used In the Industry (Your Chosen Career) To Improve Production or Work Flow Blockchain is an emerging technology that has applications in nursing. According to Hughes, & Morrow, (2019),Data Communications and Computer Networks DQ

Blockchain is applicable in healthcare to promote security and privacy of patient data. Some of the ways the technology is being used include prescription 3 tracking, data sharing, cancer registry, patient record matching, accessing patient health information, and automation of insurance claims to prevent fraud and errors (Hughes, & Morrow, 2019). Blockchain will be extensively used in nursing and healthcare in general to advocate for patient data control. The Ethical Issues Since Blockchain is a computerized system, there is always the possibility of hacking. Cybercrimes targeting patient information are common as criminals sell the data on the black market. If nurses are not educated on malware and how it can impact electronic health records, the systems can be compromised.

Security threats to patient information violates the expectation of confidentiality and privacy that patients place on healthcare providers (Hughes, & Morrow, 2019) 4 References Greenspan, D. (n.d.). Computer Systems Analyst.
