Assignment: Ways to Mitigate Climate Change

Climate change is the long-term shift in weather patterns and temperatures. Both human activities and natural causes can lead to climate change. Gas emissions such as methane and carbon dioxide are the leading cause of climate change because they form a blanket around the earth, causing the greenhouse effect. Effects of climate change include rising sea levels, floods, droughts, rising temperatures, and melting of ice in polar regions. However, strategies such as aforestation and deforestation, using renewable energy, and adopting productive agriculture can mitigate climate change.

Afforestation and Deforestation

Forests are critical components in the climate change debate. Forest can either mitigate or worsen climate change depending on the human approach. Trees play a significant role in climate change because they absorb greenhouse gases and regulate rainfall. According to Fawzy et al. (2079), trees can store carbon for a long time, but human activities threaten this potential. Therefore people must plant more trees to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Also, it is imperative to protect the already existing forest cover.

Renewable Energy

Renewable energy sources are readily available in our environment. They include wind, water, thermal energy, and energy from waste. Fawzy et al. (2074) assert that renewable energy accounted for 26.2 percent of electricity produced globally in 2018. Renewable energy is clean energy because it emits zero greenhouse gases, thus not polluting the environment and mitigating climate change. People must stop relying on fossil fuels and adopt renewable energy culture.

Generative Agriculture

Generative agriculture increases soil organic matter and restores degraded soil. Therefore generative agriculture mitigates climate. In this sense, farmers globally must adopt generative agricultural practices that promote healthier and more sustainable agriculture (Smith). These practices involve restoring buffers along streams, using organic fertilizers,  planting cover crops, and reducing reliance on pesticides.

Conclusion

Climate change is the shift in global temperatures and weather patterns. Climate change causes a rise in temperatures, droughts, melting of the ice in polar regions, and flooding. However, people can mitigate the effects of climate change by planting more trees, protecting the forest cover, practicing generative agriculture, and adopting renewable energy sources. People must avoid fossil fuel because it increases the emission of greenhouse gases.
