Respiratory Alkalosis
The selected fluid and electrolyte imbalance disorder is respiratory alkalosis. Respiratory alkalosis is characterized by the low partial pressure of carbon dioxide and elevation of the arterial pH secondary to an imbalance between the removal and production of carbon dioxide. Increased alveolar ventilation causes a rise in the rate of carbon dioxide removal. The disorder is therefore a primary acid-base derangement, where the removal of carbon dioxide is not a compensatory mechanism but a clinical manifestation. The changes that occur due to respiratory alkalosis include the shirt in electrolytes due to the imbalance (Habibzadeh et al., 2021). For example, the level of chloride anions will increase while potassium and sodium cations will decrease as they exit to other cells. There is also the reduction in calcium ions due to the changes in the extracellular pH resulting in neuromuscular symptoms such as seizures, tetany, and paresthesia. The disorder also causes vasoconstriction of the cerebral arteries, which lead to the lowering of the cerebral blood flow (Brinkman & Sharma, 2021). The other accompanying symptoms for the above changes include confusion, light-headedness, numbness, tingling of the arms, and dry mouth.

Patient education in respiratory alkalosis focuses on a number of aspects. Firstly, the patient needs education on the use of interventions such as effective breathing techniques. The patient requires education on slow breathing, holding breath and rebreathing into a breather mask or a paper. The patient should also be educated on the importance of treating the underlying cause of the respiratory alkalosis. Patients should also be educated on the symptoms of hypokalemia and hypocalcaemia, as they contribute to the development of the symptoms (Tinawi, 2021). The use of the above interventions is effective in reducing and preventing the risk of the patients developing respiratory alkalosis.
