Summary of strengths:
I have some strengths that will help me achieve the desired competencies in this practicum experience. Firstly, I have adequate professional skills. I can maintain professional boundaries and therapeutic relationships with my clients. I can also identify ethical and legal dilemmas with possible resolutions in my practice. I can collaborate with other healthcare providers in resolving ethical dilemmas in my practice. I can also practice within my scope of practice and demonstrate a non-judgmental attitude toward my clients and other healthcare providers. Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners should demonstrate professionalism in their practice. They should offer care that respects diversity and promotes safety, quality, and efficiency. I can also provide patients and their families with psychoeducation. I can educate them on strategies to achieve optimum outcomes in mental health treatment. This includes health education on lifestyle and behavioral modifications for health promotion (Shim, 2021; Sweet et al., 2021). I can also document accurately the care given to patients. This includes providing detailed information about patient assessment findings, care plans, interventions offered, monitoring, and evaluation of care outcomes. Accurate documentation in nursing is important to prevent the risk of adverse outcomes in the care process (Jasem & Younis, 2024). I am also competent in evaluating care outcomes. I use evaluation data to determine the effectiveness of care interventions and recommend new approaches to meet the patient’s needs.

Opportunities for growth:
The clinical setting provides several growth opportunities. Firstly, the practice site has highly skilled professionals who provide psychiatric care. I will collaborate with them in developing my desired competencies. I will seek my preceptor’s support to ensure I identify my areas of weaknesses and opportunities that I need to explore to achieve the stated competencies. I also need to develop adequate knowledge of the use of evidence-based interventions in treating mental health problems. Evidence-based interventions optimize safety, quality, and efficiency outcomes. I will research more on the evidence-based pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments used in treating mental health problems. I also need to develop competencies in performing age-appropriate screening and use of screening data to diagnose patients and develop treatment plans. Age-appropriate screenings augment the use of history taking and physical assessment to diagnose mental health problems. I will read extensively about the various screening tools used in mental health and interpreting them. My knowledge and skills in formulating diagnoses using the DSM-5 tools are inadequate. As a result, I will assess as many patients as possible during the practicum experience and use the data to develop and prioritize diagnoses (Kaas, 2020; Pinilla et al., 2020). I will also collaborate with my preceptor in performing mental status examinations and using the findings to develop appropriate care plans.

Now, write three to four (3–4) possible goals and objectives for this practicum experience. Ensure that they follow the SMART Strategy, as described in the Learning Resources.
Goal: By the end of the practicum experience, I should be competent in developing psychotherapeutic treatment plans for patients I see in my practice
Objective: I will implement clinical practice guidelines for at least 10 patients seen weekly during my practicum experience
Objective: I will counsel at least 5 patients and families weekly on the effective management of mental health problems
Objective: I will develop age-appropriate individualized care plans for at least 10 patients weekly during my practicum experience

Goal: By the end of the practicum experience, I should be competent in selecting different screening tools for mental health problems
Objective: I will collaborate with my preceptor during the first two weeks in using different screening tools for mental health problems
Objective: I will seek my preceptor’s feedback on my competencies and areas of improvement in using different screening tools for mental health problems
Objective: I will develop age-appropriate care plans based on screening tools results for optimum care outcomes in my practice

Goal: By the end of the practicum experience, I should be able to recommend evidence-based pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for mental health problems
Objective: I will collaborate with the care teams in prescribing pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for mental health problems
Objective: I will research extensively on the different pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions used for mental health problems
Objective: I will follow up at least 5 patients weekly to assess their response to pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments and make necessary adjustments

Clinical Skills Self-Assessment

Before embarking on any professional or academic activity, it is important to understand the background, knowledge, and experience you bring to it. You might ask yourself, “What do I already know? What do I need to know? And what do I want to know?” This critical self-reflection is especially important for developing clinical skills such as those for advanced practice nursing.

The Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Clinical Skills List and Clinical Skills Self-Assessment Form provided in the Learning Resources can be used to celebrate your progress throughout your practicum and identify skills gaps. The list covers all necessary skills you should demonstrate during your practicum experiences.

Just as you did in PRAC 6635, for this Assignment, you assess where you are now in your clinical skill development and make plans for this practicum. Specifically, you will identify strengths and opportunities for improvement regarding the required practicum skills. In this practicum experience, when developing your goals and objectives, be sure to keep assessment and diagnostic reasoning in mind.
