Incivility in Nursing Education
Civility in nursing is important for positive interpersonal relationships and improved care outcomes. Civility entails demonstrating considerate, respectful, courteous, and caring behaviors toward others. Despite the need for civility in nursing, incivility remains a common problem in healthcare. Incivility entails ambiguous, discourteous behavior aimed at causing harm and violating norms. Incivility causes poor interpersonal relationships and poor care outcomes. Therefore, this essay reviews an article on incivility in nursing and strategies to mitigate it.
The article by Rose et al. (2020) was selected for this analysis. Rose et al. (2020) examined the factors influencing incivility among nursing students and teaching strategies utilized to reduce incivility in nursing. The study was an integrative review. Quantitative and qualitative studies were reviewed. The authors used the Johns Hopkins Research Evidence Appraisal to select articles. Qualitative research was analyzed using content analysis. A literature search for the articles was done on databases, including PubMed, the Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, PsychINFO, Education Resource Information, and socINDEX. The initial search yielded 762 research articles. The number was reduced to 26 after the Johns Hopkins Research Evidence Appraisal tool was used to determine article relevance.
The 26 studies used 3398 nursing students. Data analysis revealed five key points related to incivility among nursing students and teaching strategies employed to address it. First, the analysis demonstrated that academic expectations and workload contribute to student-to-student incivility. Nursing students influenced the extent of incivility invasion of the educational environment. Secondly, incivility occurrence varied in severity. Thirdly, incivility-associated stress affected student coping. Students exposed to incivility experienced varied physical, emotional, and psychological events. Fourth, students incorporated various coping mechanisms to deal with incivility. The adopted strategies included talking with those close to them about their experiences, relying on their inner strength, and maintaining a positive attitude. Lastly, there are positive results in the establishment of effective educational strategies to address incivility. Faculty members should foster a civility culture for students.
I will engage with fellow professionals in several strategies to mitigate incivility in nursing education and practice. Firstly, I will collaborate with them to implement a civility code in nursing training institutions. A civility code refers to written contracts that increase awareness about appropriate institutional behaviors. The code inspires positive behaviors that reduce incivility in nursing education. The other strategy we would explore to mitigate incivility is educating students about civility and incivility. Education programs on appropriate staff and student behaviors will raise awareness and promote behavioral change. Education will also enhance students’ self-efficacy and resilience if exposed to incivility. We would also consider implementing journal clubs, academic workshops, and reflective exercises to help students explore their experiences with incivility. Students would explore their feelings and gain a deeper insight into the strategies needed to create a safe environment. We would also create support programs for victims of incivility. The students will benefit from social, emotional, and psychosocial support (Olsen et al., 2020). The support programs will also empower students with advocacy skills against incivility.
In summary, the reviewed article demonstrates incivility among nursing students. Nursing students utilize different strategies to cope with incivility experiences. Positive developments are noted in the approaches implemented to prevent incivility in nursing education. Faculty staff should implement strategies that promote a safety culture in their institutions. I will explore different strategies with my fellows to mitigate incivility in nursing education.
