Future Role in Advocacy for Equitable Health Services and Policies
Advocacy is integral to the improvement of population health, especially in the context of a rapidly evolving healthcare system. Population advocacy is a professional, ethical, and moral responsibility of nurses added to their strategic potential to impact healthcare through direct interaction with healthcare issues (Jurns et al., 2019). As an advanced registered nurse, I am obligated to advocate for equitable population health services and policies to address the existing health disparities. My role will include identifying and understanding factors contributing to inequities and poor health, formulating tailored actionable solutions at individual and community levels, and collaborating with relevant partners and stakeholders in advocacy to implement resultant interventions and reforms (The Future of Nursing 2020-2030, 2021). This will require active engagement in committee meetings, leadership, and legislative processes.
Various challenges are anticipated during the population advocacy process. These include unsupportive organizational structure, lack of autonomy in the healthcare setting, inadequate collaboration and cooperation among involved stakeholders, lack of communication, ineffective interpersonal partnerships, religious and cultural differences, and lack of appropriate frameworks and guidelines (Nsiah et al., 2019). These challenges can potentially impede the success of advocacy. Measures to effectively address these barriers are thus essential for the integration of policies to promote health equity.
Certain strategies will be adopted to mitigate the effects of the anticipated barriers. These include fostering strategic and mutual trusting partnerships with various stakeholders, promoting collaboration and diverse stakeholder engagement, developing clear guidelines for solutions, and developing policy entrepreneur skills (Cullerton et al., 2018). There is also a need to foster open communication throughout the advocacy and policymaking process. Cultural and religious competence is pivotal in arriving at a unified solution among diverse stakeholders. Championing equitable access to healthcare services may also necessitate the incorporation of innovative approaches such as the use of technology to attain wider coverage and impact.
