A Selection of Two Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners Competencies from National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties

Nurse practitioner faculties’ national organization documents multiple competencies for psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (APNA, 2020). However, this discussion will focus on two of those competencies, including developing and maintaining a collaborative therapeutic relationship with the patient and diagnose psychiatric disorders.

I plan to achieve these two competencies during the program. First, I will achieve the competence of developing and maintaining a collaborative therapeutic relationship with the patient by establishing a good rapport at the beginning of a therapeutic session and maintaining it throughout the interview (Weber et al., 2016). A therapeutic relationship will be established by showing empathy, care, and concern towards the client’s condition. Clients feel loved and appreciated if a psychiatrist shows respect and empathy towards what they are going through (Penda, 2017). Additionally, being concerned makes the client perceive the therapist as a friend. Consequently, the client is willing to open up and share all the issues during the session, thus enabling the therapist to offer the required help.

Secondly, the competence of diagnosis of psychiatric disorders will be achieved by assessing all determinants of the patient’s health status such as health protection, health promotion, and disease prevention. Moreover, I will utilize evidence-based clinical practice guidelines in various aspects of the diagnosis process, including screening activities, identifying health promotion needs, and guiding and counselling the client about critical issues such as the environment, development, and lifestyle. I will also obtain and document the patient’s health history paying attention to mental health history. Mental health history enhances the diagnosis of psychiatric illnesses (Malla et al., 2015). Additionally, I will obtain the family’s mental health history to aid during the diagnosis process. According to Lake and Turner (2017), family history is significant in diagnosing mental illnesses. More so, I will perform a comprehensive psychological and physical health evaluation. The diagnosis process will end with a thorough psychiatric evaluation.
