The World Health Organization article, Maternal Mortality, describes the statistics of maternal mortality. Maternal mortality is a major global health issue and a component of Sustainable Development Goals, which seeks to reduce maternal mortality to less than 70 per 100,000 live births as part of improving maternal and child health (WHO, 2021). Maternal is a crisis, especially in developing countries, which have the highest percentage of maternal mortality. According to the article, 94% of maternal deaths occur in low-income countries (WHO, 2021). Childbearing women in developing countries experience high mortality rates because of poor health systems, poor economy, poverty, and bad governance, which contribute to a lack of access to proper healthcare services from the prenatal period to the post-natal stage. On the global level, high maternal mortality rates in developing countries reflect global health inequalities and the gap between the rich and the poor.

The article further notes that maternal deaths occur during the pregnancy journey due to complications before, during, or after birth. In most cases, these complications are preventable and treatable with more effective healthcare response and accessibility to health services. Moreover, girls between 10-14 years are at greater risk of complications and death. In developing countries, 1 out of 45 girls aged 15 years is likely to die from maternal causes compared to 1 out of 5400 in developed countries (WHO, 2021).

One of the strategies that could mitigate maternal mortalities in developing countries is introducing mobile clinics in rural and underserved communities and encouraging women to seek prenatal care as early as when the pregnancy is confirmed (Krukowski et al., 2022). Evidence suggests that starting prenatal care early and continuing throughout the pregnancy period reduces the risk of pregnancy-related complications (Ali et al., 2020). Another practical initiative is nutrition-based programs for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers. Access to proper nutrition is one of the factors that promote better health outcomes for pregnant mothers, preventing the risk of ill health and complications caused by malnutrition.
