Dementia is a growing global problem that is unfortunately often diagnosed late in diseased process. Early screening and diagnosis can help reduce the burden.

There are several forms of dementia: Alzheimer Disease (AD), vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy body, Parkinson disease (PD), and frontal temporal dementia. AD accounts for 60-80% of all dementia cases, dementia with lewy body 20% of cases, PD dementia 3% of cases (Walter et al., 2014).

Early diagnosis allows for the patient to participate in the planning of their care, financial planning, and family education while they have the cognitive ability. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition diagnostic criteria can be used to differentiate neurocognitive disorders (dementia).
