TH 450 Week 2 Discussion Forum: Final Project Proposal Paper

Final Topic: Racism in the United States
The final project’s topic is racism in the United States. It has been a social issue in the country for hundreds of years. The problem has led to various civil rights movements seeking to promote equality. Social justice entails the enhancement of fairness, equity, rights and equality across various contexts of society seeking to create inclusivity (Dike, 2023). Therefore, it seeks to promote the idea that all members of a society possess similar rights, safeguards, obligations, opportunities and social benefits (Killen et al., 2021). Racism is a social justice issue as it entails conditions in which there is unfair treatment of various racial groups in society. Social justice is undermined when racism in society becomes institutionalized as is the case with the United States.

Racism has a significant connection to Catholic social teaching (CST). The church is against all forms of racism. It is considered a sin that is against God’s commands. Various themes emerge when racism is examined through the lens of Catholic social teaching. First, racism undermines human dignity (CAPP-USA, 2023). The CST considers human dignity vital and protects its violation when individuals are examined based on utilitarian and power-based standards. These teachings assert that respect for everyone irrespective of their race undermines basic rights and dignity. Second, racism undermines the principle of solidarity (CAPP-USA, 2023). This principle posits that everyone has a right to contribute to the society. Racism prevents equal opportunities for everyone preventing their role in society. Lastly, racism undermines the principle of subsidiarity which seeks to promote respect for personal dignity (CAPP-USA, 2023). The principle of subsidiarity promotes a stable social order by promoting individual responsibility. However, racism undermines this assertion by promoting inequality.
The study will be vital in providing more information concerning racism in American society. It will illustrate that racism impacts various aspects of American society including education, economics, politics and healthcare. The study will also help in understanding how racism is a social justice issue and the role Catholic social teachings can play in addressing this social justice issue.
