The pediatric clinical experience has been exciting so far. I have developed new skills and acquired knowledge that will influence my practice. I continue to develop a deeper understanding of the impact of culture on nursing practice. I have achieved the goals and objectives I set in week 1. Therefore, this paper reflects my experiences so far and my new goals that will guide my professional growth.
What Most Excited and/or Concerned Me Throughout the Pediatric Clinical Experience
The pediatric clinical experience has been exciting. One of the most exciting things I encountered was teamwork among different professionals involved in the provision of pediatric care. Healthcare providers collaborated in assessing, planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating pediatric treatment plans. Interprofessional collaboration contributes to safety, quality, and efficiency in patient care. The other exciting aspect of the pediatric clinical experience was the healthcare providers’ dedication to use evidence-based interventions in caring for pediatric patients. Best practices were utilized in caring for pediatric patients. Healthcare providers incorporate their expertise, patient values, and preferences into their decisions to improve patient outcomes. The other exciting thing was collaborating with families to ensure optimum care outcomes (Çetintaş et al., 2023). I discovered from the experience that family involvement improves treatment outcomes, including patient satisfaction with care, treatment adherence, and family empowerment to take ownership of disease management.

One of the concerning aspects of pediatric clinical experience was the emotional toll of caring for vulnerable children. Caring for children with illnesses hurt my emotional well-being. The experience made me explore strategies to ensure my emotional resilience when caring for the children. The other concern I encountered in my clinical experience was ethical dilemmas. Ethical dilemmas such as contradictions between healthcare providers and families’ views challenged my approaches to patient care (Herbst & deSante, n.d.). These challenges helped me learn effective decision-making and resolving ethical dilemmas skills in my practice.
My Definition of Family and Family Roles
My definition of family and family roles has not changed after the pediatric clinical experience. My encounters with families from different backgrounds have confirmed my earlier definition of family and family roles. My clinical experiences upheld my earlier definition of a family; that it does not necessarily mean people related by blood. Instead, it also extends to those people who are willing to help families in times of need despite being not part of the nuclear or extended families. My definition of family roles has also not changed following my clinical experience. I consider family members to have defined roles in most societies (Ocloo et al., 2021). This was evident during the clinical experience. Most families assigned caring roles to mothers while fathers made care decisions after consulting with other family members.
Influence of the Understanding of Family and Family Roles on Children’s Assessment and Their Families
My understanding of family and family roles influenced my assessment of children and their families. I learned that families are important in the effective management of childhood illnesses. Families should be actively involved in all aspects of their children’s management. Care approaches such as shared decision-making should be incorporated into the care plans. Family values and preferences should guide the decisions made by healthcare providers when treating pediatrics. Healthcare providers should also assess social determinants of health when assessing pediatric patients and their families. This will help them identify effective social support programs that can be used to improve care outcomes (Ocloo et al., 2021; Roberts et al., 2021). Therefore, my understanding of family and family roles has positively influenced my assessment of children and their families.
Impact of Understanding of Culture on My Assessments
My understanding of culture has changed and influenced the assessments I conducted during my practicum. I learned from the practicum experiences that families have unique cultural values, beliefs, and practices. Nurses and other healthcare providers should understand the impact of culture on the family’s behaviors and decisions related to the uptake of healthcare services. The understanding of culture made me focus on delivering culturally appropriate care to my patients. I also sought to understand the family’s cultural values, beliefs, and preferences to ensure that the decisions made were in the best interest of the patients and their families. Cultural understanding also increased my awareness of the importance of healthcare providers reflecting on their cultures and impact on their care decisions. Healthcare providers should embrace cultural humility and ensure that their cultural values, beliefs, and practices do not cloud their approaches to patient care (King et al., 2021; Molina-Mula & Gallo-Estrada, 2020). Therefore, cultural understanding is important for nurses and other healthcare providers to offer care that aligns with patient and family expectations.
How I did With Accomplishing the Goals and Objectives I Developed in Week 1
I achieved all the goals and objectives I developed in week 1. I was proactive in performing tasks that strengthened my competencies in my areas of weakness. I also participated in interprofessional collaboration tasks. The collaboration increased my knowledge and skills needed for managing complex cases. I benefited immensely from my preceptor’s guidance during the practicum experience. The preceptor offered feedback on my strengths and opportunities I needed to explore to achieve the desired competencies. I also developed competencies in prescribing pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for pediatric conditions. My knowledge and skills in family involvement in the care process also improved. Therefore, I look forward to applying the skills to my future practice.
New Goals
By the end of the next six months, I should have attended at least four leadership training and seminars to improve my leadership skills
By the end of the program, I should be competent enough to practice independently in my area of specialization
By the end of this year, I should be a member of at least three professional organizations to help me achieve my continuing education and professional goals
Conclusion
Overall, the pediatric clinical experience has been exciting. I developed new knowledge and skills that will enable me to offer safe, quality, and efficient care to patients and their families. My definition of family and family roles remained unchanged. My understanding of culture influenced patient assessments performed during the practicum experience. I did well in achieving the goals and objectives I set in week 1. I hope to achieve my newly set goals.

JOURNAL ENTRY #3

Critical reflection of your growth and development during your practicum experience in a clinical setting has the benefit of helping you identify opportunities for improvement in your clinical skills while also recognizing your clinical strengths and successes.

This week, you will write your last and final Journal Entry, reflecting on your clinical strengths and opportunities for improvement. Further reflect on your pediatric patients you have seen and the conditions that you have diagnosed and treated. Review your Journal Entry that you submitted in Week 1.

Journal Entry (2–3 pages):?

Explain what most excited and/or concerned you throughout your pediatric clinical experience.

Discuss how your personal definition of family and family roles has changed or stayed the same.

How has your understanding of family and family roles influenced your assessment of children and their families?

Explain how your understanding of culture (both the culture of the provider and that of the child and his or her family) has changed and how it may have influenced the assessments you conducted during your practicum.

Assess how you did with accomplishing the goals and objectives you developed in Week 1 for the practicum experience.

Based on your practicum experience, refine your existing goals and/or develop new goals for your continued education and professional practice. Be sure to consider the NAPNAP Position Statement on Age Parameters for Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Practice.
