Therefore, one should act rationally and according to the universal moral law. It means that all humans possess a right to common dignity and respect. This often opposes the concept of utilitarianism which asserts focus on the right action whose focus is promoting good and reducing suffering. It also disregards moral codes and systems, unlike Kant’s theory. One of the issues that these theories are in opposition to is that of euthanasia. According to Kant, killing when an individual is sick is morally wrong and therefore unacceptable (Fiala & MacKinnon, 2023). This is different from utilitarianism which focuses on actions that result in more good than bad. For instance, euthanasia is supported if it reduces suffering for the patient and the family. This shows how these two theories are in direct opposition.
The direct opposition of Kant’s moral theory and utilitarianism can be distinguished in our daily lives. These concepts have different ways of establishing the rightfulness or wrongness of actions. Kantian ethics looks at the intention of the action while under utilitarianism, the focus is on the actions that produce the greatest good. An example in daily life is when students are taking tests. Kant would assert that copying from others is morally wrong since there is a manipulation of others to obtain favorable results. However, utilitarianism suggests that since copying would lead to passing the test, and therefore acceptable. This shows the direct opposition of these two ethical theories.
