Week 3: Practicing, Sequencing, and Coordinating the Comprehensive Assessment

Welcome to the third week of Advanced Physical Assessment. This week, you will learn how to complete a review of systems, otherwise known as an ROS, and also learn about how critical pertinent positives and negatives can be to your assessment and ultimate treatment of care for your patient. You will learn how to appropriately document and identify abnormalities in your patient. Finally, you will discuss how to identify the seven attributes of the symptom.

The seven attributes refer to list of important data that nurses should obtain from their patients to understand their health problems better. The attributes guide nurses and other healthcare providers in developing an accurate diagnosis and determine the severity of the health problem. The attributes include location, quantity, quality, timing, influencing factors, timing, and associated manifestations. Therefore, the purpose of this essay is to examine the attribute that I believe to be most essential.

Discussion

I feel that the most essential component in the seven attributes of a symptom is the associated manifestations. Nurses often obtain information about the associated symptoms of a problem to develop a better understanding of the patient’s problem. The associated symptoms also enable them to narrow down their nursing diagnoses. Other healthcare providers such as the physicians utilize the associated symptoms to develop a medical diagnosis for their clients. For example, a patient presenting with a potential diagnosis of tuberculosis will present with symptoms such as fever, nigh sweats, weight loss, and cough. Nurses and other healthcare providers use these symptoms to develop nursing and medical diagnoses (DeNisco, 2023).

The associated symptoms also help nurses and other healthcare providers to assess the effectiveness of the selected treatment interventions. Accordingly, nurses use the associated symptoms to monitor, evaluate, and propose additional treatments to promote patient’s recovery. For example, nurses caring for a patient with headache and associated symptoms such as nausea and vomiting use them to assess the effectiveness of interventions such as the administration of analgesics to promote comfort and recovery. Nurses also utilize associated symptoms to develop nursing diagnoses and nursing care plans (Hogan-Quigley & Palm, 2021). The associated symptoms act as data that nurses use to develop both actual and potential diagnoses. The nurses develop their care plans with a focus on ensuring that the actual care needs are prioritized in the care process (Thompson, 2022). For example, the nurse would prioritize the implementation of nursing diagnoses that address physiological needs followed by psychological and self-esteem needs.

The associated manifestations are also important for nurses when collecting objective data. Accordingly, nurses utilize the information obtained on the associated manifestations to validate the obtained objective data. For example, a patient with a history of vomiting and diarrhea will have objective findings such as dehydration and hypotension. As a result, nurses use the objective data to validate the existence and severity of a health problem. The associated symptoms also guide the laboratory and diagnostic investigations that nurses and other healthcare providers request for their patients (Gulanick & Myers, 2021). For example, a patient presenting to the hospital with symptoms such as headache with unilateral paralysis may require additional investigations such as CT scan and MRI. In addition, patients complaining of health problems such as chest pain and associated symptoms such as sweating, fatigue, and dizziness may require additional investigations such as electrocardiography to rule out causes such as myocardial infarction. Therefore, associated manifestations guide the decisions that nurses and other healthcare providers make.

Conclusion

In summary, associated manifestations or symptoms is one of the most components of a symptom. The component guides the determination of the severity of a disease and the required interventions. It also guides the development of nursing and medical diagnosis as well as evaluating the effectiveness of the adopted treatments. Therefore, nurses should focus on acquiring adequate information on this component to guide nursing care.
