NUR 550 Topic 6 DQ 1

One clinical preventative intervention that has been designed to promote health and wellness for populations is the use of vaccines. Vaccines are an incredibly important clinical intervention that have enabled health professionals to keep generations of individuals safe from infection and disease (Troisi et al., 2020). With millions of lives saved, the use of vaccines has undoubtedly been one of the foremost preventative interventions designed to promote health and wellness for populations around the world. Vaccines work by introducing a weakened form of a virus or bacteria into the body, which acts as an immunological call to action (Afrough et al., 2019). When this material enters the body, it stimulates human natural immunity to send white blood cells to fend off any similar viruses in the future. Consequently, vaccinated individuals acquire protection against developing a particular infection or disease. As such, with available vaccines growing year-on-year, we continue to improve our collective health and continue upon a path of prosperity.
Vaccines have been highly successful in preventing the spread of diseases such as polio, smallpox, and measles. In other words, vaccines have proven to be an effective public health intervention, eliminating or reducing the transmission of many infectious diseases (Mellors et al., 2020). This is especially apparent with diseases such as polio, smallpox, and measles which have been stopped in their tracks by vaccines. Due to this success, immunization has become a staple of healthcare systems around the world, providing numerous benefits both individually and collectively. Vaccines are responsible for a vastly improved quality of life both at home and abroad due to its ability to reduce rates of infection in a wide range of diseases including influenza, hepatitis B, and pneumococcal disease (Gallè & Napoli, 2022). A particularly highly successful program is found with the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine that has been shown to dramatically decrease rates of cervical cancer due to its prevention against HPV infection. Safe and effective vaccines are truly revolutionizing global health with their real-world impact proving that their benefits far outweigh their risks.
In conclusion, vaccinations are a very effective therapeutic preventive intervention designed to support population health and wellbeing. Infectious disease transmission has been effectively stopped, and the strain on healthcare systems has decreased. While there are questions regarding the safety and effectiveness of vaccinations, the advantages vastly outweigh the disadvantages.
