Description of Humanistic-Existential Psychotherapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Humanistic-existential psychotherapy is a treatment intervention utilized for different mental health problems. The therapy considers human beings as a whole being rather than symptoms associated with their mental health problems. Humanistic existential therapy aims at increasing the individual’s capacity for choice and self-awareness. The therapist in this treatment approach helps patients to overcome disabling assumptions and beliefs about themselves. They emphasize self-actualization and growth instead of treating mental health disorders and alleviating them. The therapist views patients as responsible people with self-direction (Daei Jafari et al., 2020; Hoffman, 2021). As a result, the treatment only targets the present conscious processes associated with a problem. Humanistic-existential therapy also considers not being true to self as being the cause of mental health problems.
Cognitive behavioral therapy is a psychological treatment that targets thinking and behaviors. Cognitive behavioral therapy operates on the principle that psychological problems develop due to unhealthy thinking and unhealthy behaviors. It also operates on the premise that psychological problems can be managed by identifying effective cognitive processes, behaviors, and coping mechanisms. Therapists in cognitive behavioral therapy aim to change thinking patterns to transform behaviors and mental health outcomes. A therapist helps patients to recognize the negative thoughts that cause mental health problems, reevaluate them with reality, and identify behaviors and motivations that should inform change. The therapist also helps patients to have a sense of confidence in their abilities to overcome their psychological problems (Dobson & Dozois, 2021). Over time, patients develop effective behaviors that enable them to face their fears, calm their minds, and relax their bodies when faced with adversities.
Differences
Despite being psychotherapies, humanistic-existential therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy differ. One of the differences between the two therapies is that humanistic-existential therapy focuses on the patient while cognitive behavioral therapy aims at symptoms of altered cognition and behaviors. Humanistic-existential therapy considers mental health problems to be associated with altered patient’s ability to make choices about their lives. As a result, the therapist develops interventions that increase the understanding of the patients about their abilities (Daei Jafari et al., 2020). Cognitive behavioral therapy does not consider mental health problems as consequences of the lack of choices for patients about their lives. Instead, it considers mental health problems as disorders that develop due to unhealthy thinking and behaviors (Dobson & Dozois, 2021). The therapist’s role in the treatment is to change the negative thinking and behaviors for the patient to recover from a mental health problem.
The other difference between humanistic-existential therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy is that while cognitive behavioral therapy is focused on the things that patients can change in their thinking and behaviors, humanistic-existential focuses on the patient’s convictions and beliefs. Humanistic-existential seeks to increase the patient’s understanding and awareness about their abilities to live a full life while cognitive behavioral therapy helps patients to identify positive thoughts and behaviors to respond to their issues and experiences in society. Humanistic-existential therapy aims at promoting growth and acceptance in a patient. However, cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on behavioral and cognitive change (Hoffman, 2021). The differences in the treatment modalities imply that PMHNPs should select the treatments based on the anticipated outcomes. For example, it would be appropriate for a PMHNP to adopt humanistic-existential therapy if a patient experiences challenges in making choices while cognitive behavioral therapy would be appropriate for altered cognition and maladaptive behaviors.
Video
The selected video shows a client with difficulties in understanding themselves and experiencing anger. This implies that the patient lacks self-awareness and understanding of her abilities. The patient cannot also make decisions based on his life choices. Therefore, humanistic-existential therapy would be appropriate in this case. Humanistic-existential therapy will help the client understand his abilities and ways of living a life of fulfillment (Vos, 2023). The outcomes would have been different if cognitive behavioral therapy had been used in the case study. The anticipated outcome would have been a change in the thinking and behaviors of the client should cognitive behavioral therapy have been used (Dobson & Dozois, 2021). This is because cognitive behavioral therapy transforms the thoughts and behaviors of a patient with mental health problems.
Conclusion
Overall, this essay has focused on cognitive behavioral therapy and humanistic-existential therapy. Both are psychotherapies but differ in their use, approaches, and anticipated outcomes. PMHNPs should assess patient needs and the anticipated treatment outcomes before selecting the psychotherapeutic approach for use in treating mental health disorders. The practitioner utilized humanistic-existential therapy in the selected video. The outcomes would have been different if cognitive behavioral therapy had been used.
