TH UNIVER NSG 4000T Sample e 3500 Hollywood Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90210 March 13, 2017 The Honorable Representative Torres 516 Cannon House Office Building Washington, DC 20515 program Dear Representative Torres: RN-BSN I am a constituent and a student in a Nurse Practitioner program at Freedom University. I am writing you regarding the elimination of physician oversight for nurse practitioners (NPS) working in primary care. As an RN and a consumer of health care, I urge you to introduce legislation that will allow NPs to perform at their level of training and to provide reimbursement at the same rate as physicians for care provided. NPs are advanced practice nurses who have achieved a Master’s Degree in Nursing and clinical hours needed to provide safe and competent care in a primary care setting. There are currently 21 states and the District of Columbia with full practice authority that do not need physician oversight to practice under their own licenses without the need for physician supervision. Due to the increase in insured persons and the aging population, the need for primary care practitioners will increase dramatically.

I am seeking your support because: Projections states a shortage of 20,400 physicians by 2020 (Blackwell & Neif, 2015). Substantial increase in primary care NP graduates year over year (Laursen et al., 2015) Low number of physicians entering primary care residencies When I was a child, I remember visiting my pediatrician and feeling very comfortable with her. She would explain a lot to me in ways that I could understand and I would feel empowered in my own health. Years later, I learned that my pediatrician was actually a pediatric nurse practitioner and I was motivated to use her as a role model for my own life and a career as a RN. My wife is also a NP who works in cardiology – a specialty that still would require physician oversight. It is only the primary care specialty that we seek independence from physician supervision.

Please support the NPs who decide to work in primary care by supporting national guidelines for supervision and reimbursement to make it easier for states to enact policies regarding this issue. Please contact me directly if you have any questions at 555-357-9111. The Honorable [REPRESENTATIVE LAST NAME] U.S. House of Representatives Washington, DC 20515 Dear Representative [LAST NAME]: For me it’s RN-BSN 3. State your relationship to the legislator I am writing to you as a constituent and a psychologist regarding the Graduate Psychology Education (GPE) Program, which is funded through the Health Resources and Services Administration and administered through the Bureau of Health Professions. More specifically, I am writing to urge your support for a $6.5 million FY 2005 appropriation for the GPE Program, the only federal program solely dedicated to the support of psychology education and training. 4. Concentrate on one issue at a time. 5. Elimination of physician oversight for nurse practitioners DQ

Be factual. The GPE program provides funds to universities and internship sites through a competitive grant process to support the interdisciplinary training of psycholo- gists to work with underserved populations (e.g., elderly, children, rural persons, chronically ill, and victims of abuse and trauma). This funding supports the training of graduate psychology students to provide services to communities (rural and urban), which have little or no access to behavioral and mental health services. 6. Give justification. For example, in our local community GPE funding is making a significant differ- ence for the elderly, which as you know constitutes 13% of our state’s popula- tion. Through the multidisciplinary GPE program, nursing, dental and geropsychology graduate students are providing services to the elderly in hospital clinics, nursing homes and homeless shelters.
