In Meditation 1 Descartes introduces his method of radical doubt. Write an essay responding to the following questions:

4) What is the purpose of the evil demon thought experiment and how does it relate to mathematics?

5) In Meditation 2, what, according to Descartes is the first thing we can know with certainty and why is this certain (remember, something that is certain is impossible to be mistaken).

What argument does he present to show we can be certain of this? To complete this assignment you will need to read Descartes Meditations 1 – 2 and Lecture 8.

Your essay should not discuss or make reference to the historical context of Lecture 7. The majority of your essay should be in your own words, however, you may quote from Meditations 1 and 2 and Lecture 7.

If you do quote from this material you must first introduce the author (According to Descartes, ”…” (Meditations, pg. x), or According to Professor Bryant, ”…” (Lecture 7, pg. 3).

Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.

Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.

Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.

The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.
