Evidence-Based Practice in the World
Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the cornerstone of high-quality patient care and improved public health. EBP’s primary goal is to promote best practices in healthcare delivery by judiciously using current best evidence to make patient care decisions (Connor et al., 2023). EBP implementers combine the best evidence with clinical expertise and patient values to build effective care delivery strategies. The Joint Commission’s website reflects an organization that recognizes the value of EBP and is committed to supporting the use of scientific evidence and resources to address patient care problems. The organization helps healthcare organizations achieve zero harm through leading practices and sharing knowledge and expertise. Among many areas, EBP is evident in the website’s priorities section, where infection prevention and control are achieved through resources from The Joint Commission and external evidence-based sources (The Joint Commission, 2024). These resources help healthcare facilities to implement evidence-based strategies for preventing and controlling infections.
Exploring the organization’s priorities and other areas shows its work is grounded in the EBP. For instance, infection control practices, including central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) toolkits, hand hygiene, and antibiotic stewardship, are informed by current best evidence (The Joint Commission, 2024). Reputable organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), provide the external resources that The Joint Commission uses in guiding healthcare facilities in infection control practices to achieve accreditation.
A nurse’s perception of a healthcare organization depends on its commitment to achieving the desired health goals. The information on The Joint Commission’s efforts to ensure safe healthcare practices has changed my perception in that it does more than I imagined to ensure high-quality care for patients and safer populations. The resources on best practices are instrumental to ensuring healthcare facilities can effectively prevent hospital-acquired infections and other safety concerns that increase healthcare costs. As a result, nursing leaders and staff should utilize the best evidence resources the organization recommends to ensure safe clinical environments for patients and care providers.
