Morphine vs. Fentanyl
Morphine and fentanyl are both opioids. They produce their effects by acting on pain receptors in the brain to cause euphoria. They have a high rate of addiction if used inappropriately. Despite being opioids, the two drugs differ. Morphine exists as an opioid in its purest form while fentanyl exists as a synthetic opioid. Fentanyl has high potency as compared to morphine. The high potency in fentanyl increases the risk of abuse among the population as compared to morphine. The use of morphine is high in the clinical settings as compared to fentanyl (Healthcare, 2023). Morphine also exists in several forms of use as compared to fentanyl, which makes morphine being highly available for different levels of pain.
The strengths of morphine and fentanyl also differ. Fentanyl is reported to be 100 times stronger than morphine in producing its effects. As a result, it is largely utilized in the treatment of most severe pain as compared to morphine. The high strength of morphine makes it not the safest drug for use in pain management because of the increased risk of abuse and addiction. Morphine and fentanyl produce side effects that include depression of the respiratory system. However, based on its strength, fentanyl has a high risk of causing severe repertory depression as compared to morphine. Fentanyl also increases the risk of high mortality rates due to misuse as compared to morphine. Therefore, the use of fentanyl in healthcare and community settings is highly regulated to minimize the risks associated with its use (Skidmore-Roth, 2022). The prescription of these opioids is also highly regulated to ensure safety in their use.
