Summary of strengths:
I have several strengths that will enable me to provide appropriate psychiatric care to my patients. First, my professional skills are top-notch. This can be seen in my competencies in various professional practice areas, including maintaining professional boundaries when working with clients, practicing within my scope of practice, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. I can also identify and resolve legal and ethical dilemmas in my practice. I can also collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams involved in psychiatric care. This will ensure I offer valuable insights into patient assessment, treatment, monitoring, and outcome evaluation. I am also competent in providing psychoeducation to patients and their families. I understand the different approaches to psychiatric condition management. This understanding informs my competencies in offering psychoeducation to patients and their families. I have mastered documentation in my practice. I can accurately document the care given to patients and any referrals made to optimize care outcomes. I am also confident in performing psychiatric evaluations. This includes conducting and interpreting functional assessments, psychosocial assessments, and mental status examinations (Jacobs, 2020; Scheydt & Hegedüs, 2021; Wheeler & Phillips, 2021). Competencies in these areas will enhance my diagnostic accuracy and the development of patient-centered care plans.

Opportunities for growth:
I should explore some areas for my professional growth. First, I should develop competencies in using different psychiatric screening tools in my practice. I should be able to interpret the results of screening tools and use them to formulate diagnoses and treatment plans. I also need to build my competencies in the use of clinical guidelines in treating psychiatric conditions. My knowledge of evidence-based data translation into practice is still inadequate. I need to seek my preceptor’s support in selecting appropriate clinical evidence for treating psychiatric conditions. I am also not confident in evaluating psychiatric outcomes and using findings to modify treatment plans. Evaluation provides insights into the effectiveness of the adopted care interventions and the need for improvements (Chan et al., 2020; Kim et al., 2021; Stubbe, 2020). I will collaborate with my preceptor to evaluate care outcomes to achieve my desired competencies in this area.

Clinical Skills Self-Assessment

Before embarking on any professional or academic activity, it is important to understand the background, knowledge, and experience you bring to it. You might ask yourself, “What do I already know? What do I need to know? And what do I want to know?” This critical self-reflection is especially important for developing clinical skills such as those for advanced practice nursing.

The PMHNP Clinical Skills List and PMHNP Clinical Skills Self-Assessment Form provided in the Learning Resources can be used to celebrate your progress throughout your practicum and identify skills gaps. The skills list covers all necessary skills you should demonstrate during your practicum experiences.

For this Assignment (just as you did in PRAC 6645), you assess where you are now in your clinical skill development and make plans for this practicum. Specifically, you will identify strengths and opportunities for improvement regarding the required practicum skills. In this practicum experience, when developing your goals and objectives, be sure to keep assessment and diagnostic reasoning in mind. As you complete your self-assessment this week, you may wish to look back over your self-assessments from prior practicums to reflect on your growth.
