Assignment: Diversity and Health Assessments

Assignment: Diversity and Health Assessments

Assignment: Diversity and Health Assessments

Nurses encounter patients from culturally diverse backgrounds, which encourages a nurse to engage directly in face-to-face interactions with these patients. Nurses who interact with patients from diverse cultural groups can improve or modify their existing beliefs about a cultural group, preventing stereotyping. Thus, nurses are expected to have cultural skills, which are the ability to obtain relevant cultural data about the patient’s presenting problem and accurately conduct a culturally-based physical assessment (Nair & Adetayo, 2019). The purpose of this paper is to discuss the socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and cultural factors related to the assigned patient case and develop questions for the patient.

Socioeconomic, Spiritual, Lifestyle, and Cultural Factors

The socioeconomic factors related to the patient include her level of education, occupation, income, and neighborhood. The patient’s level of education and language may impact her understanding of her health condition and the importance of adhering to recommended treatments (Medina & AETC, 2021). Besides, her occupation and income determine if she can afford health insurance, which will be crucial in accessing specialized consultations, diagnostic tests, and advanced treatments. Furthermore, her neighborhood could be influencing her health, particularly if there is access to clean and safe water, healthy foods, and exposure to pollutants that pose health risks to individuals.

The patient’s spirituality may affect her adherence to treatment and level of coping. Spirituality influences how individuals cope with diseases, consequently impacting functional and health status and quality of life. Moreover, if the patient has high spiritual beliefs, it lowers the chances of adhering to treatment (Elhag et al., 2022). Lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity, alcohol consumption, and smoking could contribute to the patient’s GI distress. Cultural practices may also influence the CAM measures she takes. The patient may have used traditional Hispanic pain “hot” treatments like teas, herbs, and massages (Medina & AETC, 2021).

Issues That You Would Need To Be Sensitive

The nurse should be sensitive to issues surrounding the patient’s language barrier, self-treating, migration status, and health insurance. Using the patient’s daughter to ask sensitive questions, especially about reproductive health issues, might be difficult. Thus, it would be important to have a professional interpreter. Many Hispanics are used to self-treating since most medications are available without a prescription in their home countries. Thus, it will be important to identify any self-treatment interventions the patient could have taken (Medina & AETC, 2021). Furthermore, if the patient is a recent immigrant, she could be facing barriers to care, like illegal immigration status, illiteracy, and a different set of health beliefs, that the clinician should be open to during the interview.

Conclusion

The patient’s literacy level could impact her understanding of the symptoms, while her income level may impact her ability to afford health insurance. The language barrier could be affecting her understanding of the treatment instructions. Lifestyle factors could have contributed to the abdominal pain, and cultural factors may influence the interventions she takes to ease the pain. The clinician should be sensitive to the patient’s language barrier, self-treating, migration, and health insurance status.
