NRSG 313 UNIT 4 DISCUSSION
Despite alternative therapies not being understood in health practice, their benefits in the continuum of care cannot be ignored. These therapies involve the use of non-invasive and non-pharmaceutical techniques which guarantee improved patient outcomes without posing any potential danger to these clients (Kearney et al., 2020). Alternative treatments such as acupuncture, chiropractic, and acupressure are evidence-based practices that have been incorporated along with other modalities of care to optimize quality outcomes for patients. Due to an increasing interest in alternative therapies, professional doctors and other health cadres have found a niche to specialize in such practices. With this approach, there are chiropractors and acupuncturists who ensure that complementary care adheres to the ethics of medical practice to guarantee their safety to patients (Foley et a., 2020). Besides, some of the alternative practices like the use of cold water to treat smooth muscle pain as well as herbs and oils for the treatment of a mild respiratory illness are relatively cheaper when compared with conventional medicine (Steel et al., 2019). With these alternative therapies, patients can find them cost-effective for self-care before seeking the services of qualified specialists and therefore should be incorporated into mainstream plans of care.
Complementary therapies of care can be effective in population-based nursing where primary care is taken into account as a preventive mechanism for an impending illness. As such, nurses have crucial roles to promote the safe use of these alternative care especially by informing patients about their existence, benefits, and risks (Homberg et al., 2022). As a nurse, there is a need to encourage patients to adopt some of these alternative care into self-care practices to improve their well-being when recuperating from acute or chronic illness (Kearney et al., 2020). However, nurses can play an advisory role to health stakeholders to encourage insurance coverage of these practices so that they are incorporated into the Affordable Care Act in a bid to cushion patients from exorbitant prices charged by alternative medical practitioners.
