However, reality TV is not really realistic due to the manipulated features of characters and situations. Often, reality TV includes fictional elements, including scripted events that do not provide a true reflection of reality (Bhandari, 2023). It is typical for participants to present a corrupted version of themselves as the shows’ producers manipulate events to influence viewers in a predetermined way. A suitable example is illustrating some body types as perfect to make viewers feel better about themselves and closely relate to the scripted situations. The underlying concept is psychological manipulation, where shows and the main characters distort the perception of reality.

Several changes could be made in the production process to ensure the programs are more honest in portraying naturalistic behavior. As cited by Ghoghre (2023), naturalistic observation of a subject involves closely evaluating their behavior in their natural environment. This observation does not influence or alter the subject’s behavior as in reality TV. As a result, the content during production can be enriched by including the main character’s life experiences in diverse natural environments. As per Peek (2024), reality shows demonstrate perfection as people party, model, travel, and engage in other high-profile and enjoyable activities. This skewed reality can be changed by including scenes (life events) where celebrities struggle with health, maintaining relationships, and finances, among other routine struggles. Reality TV programs, such as Botched, show that the pursuit of a perfect body could be risky. Reality TV shows may also include different versions of the same story to prevent people from interpreting things superficially and being impressed by distorted reality.

Therefore, is Reality TV “really” realistic? What changes could be made in producing these programs that would result in a more honest portrayal of naturalistic behavior?
