PH 480 Lesson 4 Journal Assignment
Euthanasia in bioethics entails ending a patient’s life who is in great pain from a terminal illness upon their request. The issue has elicited conflicting debates with some calling for its ban while others calling for its legalization. Various viewpoints call for the banning of this medical practice. For instance, it is against the 3rd article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This article underscores the essence of the right to live. It posits that all individuals have a right to life, liberty and security (Ozturk & Demirsoy, 2021). Therefore, euthanasia is against the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and should be disallowed.

It is also important to examine whether euthanasia should be banned from an ethical standpoint. Ethics refers to the judgment of a person’s action and is dependent on the context. Euthanasia is against the medical professional code of ethics referred to as the Hippocratic Oath (Emina, 2021). The primary role of doctors is to save lives, therefore grounds for banning euthanasia. The practice is not a healing proposition can could potentially undermine trust in the patient-physician relationship. This practice should also be banned according to Kantian ethics. Kant posits that death should not be a means. Euthanasia should not be accepted for minimizing suffering or cost saving. Kant’s theory is also supported by the concept of human rights (Sarkar, 2019). Euthanasia is against categorical imperative that provides moral laws to be followed irrespective of one’s desires. Allowing euthanasia would undermine the understanding of the intrinsic value of human life. Lastly, euthanasia is against the teachings and values of Christianity which asserts that life is a gift from God (Abakare, 2021). As a result, only God has the right to take life, therefore, there is no need for euthanasia for patients.
