Healthcare facilities maintain and improve their services and enhance patient outcomes through continuous quality improvement (CQI). The core goal or objective of CQI is to enhance the quality of care offered to patients through various methods like implementing new procedures and policies. CQI entails setting goals, monitoring processes, and making requisite improvements. Nurses have a responsibility to do their best to improve patient outcomes (Endeshaw, 2021). An example of applying continuous quality improvement (CQI) in my present position is implementing evidence-based practice (EBP) interventions to enhance patient care by reducing the occurrence of adverse events like hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) and falls. Hand hygiene measures and protocols can help improve patient safety levels and reduce the rate of infection transmission, especially from providers to patients. Therefore, proposing a CQI project to enhance hand hygiene compliance is a critical step to reducing hospital-acquired infections.

Implementing this project requires one to collect data on the present compliance rate by observing and recording instances where providers do not adhere to the set protocols. After the observation, one sets a goal like increasing the hand hygiene compliance rate by 50% within three months to reduce infections. Quality improvement tools and methods are essential in implementing the suggested intervention (Khattak et al., 2020). In this case, the quality improvement method that I would use is the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle. Based on the model, planning will entail providing sufficient education to nurses, gathering materials required for the sessions, and ensuring accessibility to hygiene resources. The “Do” will entail implementing the suggested protocols in the nursing department for three weeks to determine their effectiveness while studying will involve measuring the effects of the intervention on hand hygiene and the rate of HAIs.
Studying will involve observing and recording staff behavior and monitoring the HAI rates. Based on the outcomes, the team will refine the intervention and implement the project within the entire organization to reduce infections (Ramly et al., 2022). Therefore, continuous quality improvement (CQI) is an essential component of nursing to guarantee and improve patient care quality. Through this approach, nurses can improve outcomes and address obstacles in the healthcare industry while improving patient satisfaction rates.

Professional nursing organizations are a core part of the nursing profession and advocacy for nursing practice. These organizations like the American Nurses Association (ANA) confer numerous benefits to nurse professionals and the nursing practice that include professional and career development through enhancing knowledge, skills, and competencies. These organizations advance a professional culture that fosters the values and ethos of the profession among members. These organizations collectively advocate on behalf of nurses and other constituents like patients. The organizations organize seminars, workshops, and conferences to improve nursing skills and abilities to offer care (Chiu et al., 2021). The organizations offer a platform for nurses to interact and develop professional relationships, and be abreast with current trends and novel research evidence to improve care delivery. These organizations advocate for nursing practice through research and protection of nurse welfare and wellness. For instance, they advocate better treatment interventions for patients for increased job satisfaction among nurses and better workplace conditions devoid of lateral violence and bullying that adversely affect nursing professionals.
Professional nursing organizations are valuable in advocacy and activism associated with patient care. These organizations work to ascertain that patients get the best possible care and protect their rights. They attain these goals through setting standards for nursing practice focused on quality care, and patient advocacy where they advocate and protect patient rights through better policies and practices for the best interest of the client (Chiu et al., 2023). They also create public awareness about health issues and the role and responsibility of nurses in healthcare to deliver quality patient care.
The professional nursing organization related to my practice is the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). The AANP focuses on various specialties of nurse practitioners, from family nurse practitioners to geriatric and pediatric nurses among others. The organization keeps its members informed about changes in healthcare through publications, webinars, and conferences where nurses interact with others to learn new trends, novel research evidence to improve care and know existing career and professional development opportunities (AANP, 2024). The association also ensures its members access clinical practice resources, research findings, and updates on legislative and regulatory mandates that affect advanced nursing practice at all levels of practice and administration. The association offers opportunities for continuing education and professional development through certification programs, facilitating networking and mentorship activities, and hosting educational events as well as access to resources for individual progression in nursing.
