Topic 2 Discussion 2: Introduction to Advanced Registered Nursing Paper

Clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) are advanced practice registered nurses with master’s or doctoral degrees in nursing. They provide direct patient care, act as consultants for nursing staff, and actively engage in improving healthcare delivery systems. CNSs are expected to demonstrate competency when making ethical decisions and help colleagues address ethical issues (Lee et al., 2021). Besides, they participate in community activities to offer awareness of ethical issues like advance directives at the end of life. CNSs are expected to adhere to the nine provisions of the nurses’ Code of Ethics by the American Nurses Association (ANA).

Clinical nurse leaders (CNLs) are also master’s educated nurses prepared to be clinical leaders across the continuum of care within any healthcare setting. The American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL) upholds the practice of ethical behavior as a core competency of the CNL (Downs et al., 2022). Thus, CNL must maintain professional nursing values and standards in all scopes of nurse leadership practice. Like CNSs, CNLs are governed by the ANA code of ethics and should uphold the nine provisions.

CNSs are involved in direct patient care, while CNLs coordinate patient care. Thus, during patient care, the CNS is expected to practice with compassion and respect for each individual’s inherent dignity, worth, and unique attributes (Lee et al., 2021). In this situation, the CNL’s primary commitment is to the patient. On the other hand, the CNL is expected to promote, advocate for, and protect patients’ health, rights, and safety in the hospital units (Downs et al., 2022). Besides, the CNL should use individual and collective efforts to establish, maintain, and improve the ethical environment of the clinical setting.
