ASSIGNMENT: CONTROVERSY ASSOCIATED WITH PERSONALITY AND PARAPHILIC DISORDERS
CONTROVERSY ASSOCIATED WITH PERSONALITY AND PARAPHILIC DISORDERS
Between 10% and 20% of the population experience personality disorders. They are difficult to treat as individuals with personality disorders are less likely to seek help than individuals with other mental health disorders. Treatment can be challenging as they do not see their symptoms as painful to themselves or others.
Paraphilic disorders are far more common in men than in women, and generally quite chronic, lasting at least two years. Treatment of these disorders usually involves both psychotherapeutic and pharmacologic treatments.
In this Assignment, you will explore personality and paraphilic disorders in greater detail. You will research potentially controversial elements of the diagnosis and/or treatment and explain ethical and legal considerations when working with these disorders.

Controversies Associated with Personality and Paraphilic Disorders
Paraphilic disorders are mental health disorders that affect a significant proportion of the population. The affected patients have different sexual interests and preferences from what society considers normal. Patients have intense, recurrent sexually arousing fantasies, behaviors, or urges that involve non-human objects, children, or non-consenting persons occurring for at least six months. Pedophilic disorder is an example of paraphilic disorder. Intense sexually arousing urges, fantasies, or behaviors that involve children characterize pedophilic disorder. Therefore, this essay examines the controversy that surrounds pedophilic disorder, my professional beliefs about it, strategies for maintaining a therapeutic relationship with a patient with pedophilic disorder, and ethical and legal considerations related to the disorder.
Controversy that Surrounds Pedophilic Disorder
Controversies surround pedophilic disorder. The first controversy is the quantification of pedophilic disorder as a disease. Mental health problems are conditions that can harm the patient or others. However, in pedophilic disorder, only the victims are harmed and not those diagnosed with the disorder. This makes pedophilic disorder more of a criminal act than a mental health disorder (Münch et al., 2020). Besides, the lack of harm to perpetrators of sexual acts in pedophilic disorder makes it fall out of the confines of what constitutes an illness.
Controversies also exist on the definition of pedophilic disorder. For most, pedophilic disorder has high linkages with socially deviant behaviors. People diagnosed with pedophilic disorder and those with histories of sexual offenses have a high risk of re-offending. As a result, they are considered vices of immoral conduct or thought and not mental health disorders. Scholars have also argued that pedophilic disorder and other paraphilias are social concepts of pressure rather than advances in the field of science. Accordingly, paraphilia diagnosis is largely grounded on societal norms and not psychiatric health (Heron et al., 2023; Kiper et al., 2021). Therefore, insufficient evidence or grounds support a diagnosis of pedophilia or paraphilia disorders, hence, the controversies.
Professional Beliefs about Pedophilic Disorder
I believe that pedophilia disorder is a mental health disorder. This is because pedophilia is beyond one’s control. The fact that patients require mental health treatments for pedophilia makes it a mental health problem. I also believe that patients should be provided with safe, quality, and efficient care for pedophilic disorders (Bayram et al., 2023). This would ensure the promotion of optimum mental health for all despite their diagnoses.
Strategies for Maintaining the Therapeutic Relationship with a Patient with Pedophilic Disorder
Several strategies can be adopted to maintain the therapeutic relationship with a patient with pedophilic disorder. Firstly, psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners should show respect when treating patients with pedophilic disorders. They should not be judgmental during the patient-nurse interaction and aim to promote honesty and trust in the treatment process. Practitioners should also show empathy in the treatment process. They should acknowledge the experiences of their patients without being judgmental. They should also show a consistent approach to therapy to ensure the clients feel safe with them in the treatment process (Kiper et al., 2021). It is also important for practitioners to educate their clients about pedophilic disorder to raise their awareness and increase their health-seeking habits and engagement in positive lifestyles and behaviors.
Ethical and Legal Considerations Related to Pedophilic Disorder
Some of the ethical and legal considerations related to pedophilic disorder that I need to bring to my practice includes ensuring justice, informed consent, confidentiality, and non-maleficence. I must ensure clients access the care that they need irrespective of their diagnoses. I must also ensure their right to confidentiality and privacy is protected to eliminate undesired outcomes such as trauma with the care process. I must also adopt treatments that minimize the risk of harm and optimize outcomes in the treatment (Bašić, 2020). The considerations are important for the promotion of safe, quality, efficient, and ethical treatment for clients diagnosed with pedophilic disorders.
Conclusion
In summary, controversies surround pedophilic disorder. Practitioners should adopt care interventions that promote a therapeutic relationship with patients diagnosed with pedophilic disorder. I believe that pedophilic disorder is a mental health problem. Legal and ethical considerations should inform the care given to patients with pedophilic disorder.
