NURS 6003 Walden Assignment Part 1: Developing an Academic and Professional Network NURS 6003

Assignment Part 1: Developing an Academic and Professional Network NURS 6003

Academic and Professional network are important in attaining career goals. “Professional networking for nurses allows professionals to explore the field and develop a strong support system within the medical community.” (Professional networking in Nursing,” 2019).

Professional network emphasize on the development of relationships and interaction among nurses and scholar practitioners. This type of networking among medical practitioners can be attained by attending in seminars, conferences, and joining professional bodies with other specialists in higher positions in the field of healthcare. (Nursing. Org, 2019). ). According to Wofford, there are different ways one can network with others of same interest or disciplines. Majority of people tend to lean towards social media networking for easy accessibility. It involves forums that are mentioned above. Coworkers, friends and family can serve as support system/network. It is most likely that someone you know will be the link between you and your next job (Wofford, P). I was able to get my first job through my preceptor because she put in good word for me.

Week 1 | Part 1: My Academic and Professional Network

NETWORK MEMBER 1

Name: Yelena Malkamalova

Title: MSN, NP

Organization: William Osler Health System – Brampton Civic Hospital, Brampton Ontario Canada

Academic or Professional: Professional

Why I chose this person or team, and how they will help me succeed in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Yelena has been a Registered Nurse for over 17 years, with previous experience in Obstetrics. While working full-time and raising her family, she returned to school to obtain her FNP license and a certificate in mental health. She is currently employed by William Osler’s outpatient clinic. Yelena and I met during my final clinical rotation in nursing school. She was part of a team that was working with a final-year nursing student at the time. She is well-educated and well-versed. She had excellent clinical skills and provided feedback on time. I learned a lot from her in the 12 weeks she was my preceptor.

She was meticulous in her instruction and made certain that her students practiced holistically while incorporating evidence-based knowledge into the care we provided to all of our patients. Our friendship did not end when I finished my practicum. I remembered she would keep me updated on her progress in her MSN/NP program, and I was able to ask her questions about the NP role and education.

When I was having health problems, she encouraged me to persevere. She stood by me until I received my Registered Nurse (RN) license and my first job at Credit Valley Hospital. She was overjoyed when I told her I was starting my MSN/NP program at Walden University. Part 1 of the assignment: Creating an Academic and Professional Network NURS 6003

I chose Yelena Malkamalova FNP/PMHNP because we shared similar goals; she achieved her career goals in such a short period of time despite many responsibilities, including being a wife, mother to two teenagers, and working as an RN. She is an incredible inspiration and role model for me. When I was doubting myself and faced with other challenges, she was always encouraging me to pursue career advancement. I appreciate her advice, friendship, and support. I believe that collaborating with her on my MSN/NP program will help me become a scholar practitioner, achieving both my academic and professional goals.

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Notes: Dr. Arolambo is an advanced practice nurse practitioner, she works as a Psychiatry mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP), precepts MSN/NP student for their practicum experience and mentors other nurses. She finished her Bachelor degree in nursing in 2011; she worked for few years in Emergency department at Brandon Hospital in Florida. While working as a Registered nurse, she trained many new hired nurses and nursing students. She finished her MSN/FNP in 2016 and later got her certificate in Psychiatry mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP). Few years ago, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia to further her education and she proceeded in acquiring a Doctorate degree in nursing (DNP). Since she moved to Atlanta, she has been working with people experiencing mental health issues and their families. Assignment Part 1: Developing an Academic and Professional Network NURS 6003

Dr Arolambo is my maternal cousin and mentor. We are very close and we call each other sisters.  She supported me throughout my nursing school and she has been a great support system for me. I chose Dr. Arolambo as one of my professional network because of her experience, work and education. She has vast knowledge in mental health and her practice is evidence based. She is very compassionate with her clients and families. I visited her at her clinic this January; I was amazed with her work ethics and interactions with her clients and staff.

I look forward to collaborating with her on my journey at Walden University in becoming a scholar practitioner like her. She will be a great resource due to her vast experience and knowledge in nursing and management. I follow her work on social media, where she uses this medium to share information with large population and not just her clients on mental health stigmatization, managing mental health and accessing resources for mental health.

NETWORK MEMBER 3

Name:  Annie Cuellar

Title: Student Success Advisor

Organization: Walden University

Academic or Professional: Academic

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Notes:

I started looking into nursing school for MSN program last December. I checked and researched on many schools. Walden University was different,  I have been supported right from the first click on the school website till the moment I made my decision to fulfil my professional goal at Walden. My enrolment specialist was Wadii Fettah, he checked on me via email and telephone to ensure that I was doing well and to check on my application process. I got email that announced Anne Cellar as my Student Success Advisor, ever since then, we have been communicating via email for something as easy as picking my courses. She encouraged me to finish the Student Readiness Orientation. She mentioned to me that her team is available to support me throughout my program here at Walden in attaining my professional and academic goals.

I chose Anne Cellar as my academic network member being my Student Success Advisor; she will be my go to person in accessing Walden University resources as she and her team are part of Walden University that support student academic goals. The way my program is going now, I know there will be times that I will need to contact her and her team for assistance. I am guaranteed that Anne will be resourceful and a great support in my MSN program. I am glad that Walden University has a support system readily for students to succeed in their respective programs. Assignment Part 1: Developing an Academic and Professional Network NURS 6003

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Notes:

In our initial introduction in class that I read, each one of us is from various specialties with several years of nursing and life experience. Some of us have shared our vision and mission, challenges, strength and weaknesses.

I chose my colleagues as my academic network members because of our previous experiences, ambitions, goals and visions. By collaborating with my colleagues, I expect to learn new ideas, get feedback, and share information as we develop ourselves in becoming expert in nursing. Our weekly discussions and feedback from my colleagues will inspire me to improve on mu writing and critical thinking skills.

Walden University has provided us with different forms to connect, for example, class café is a good forum for me and my colleagues to network; some of us have shared personal emails to work together as study partner.

It is really important for me to network with my other colleagues in MSN/NP program, this program is 100% online. Therefore, participating in online discussion and through other platforms like Facebook, class café and chat rooms are essential to succeed in this MSN program and as a scholar practitioner. Assignment Part 1: Developing an Academic and Professional Network NURS 6003

You probably have a lot of questions (and perhaps some hesitation) about the journey you are undertaking. How do I navigate the online classroom? How can I have access to a library in this environment? The Student Readiness Orientation (SRO) minicourse available on your MyWalden page provides answers to such questions and helps ensure you understand how to navigate the online classroom and utilize the many resources available to you as a student at Walden.

The Readiness Check will help you determine your prepardness for navigating the online classroom.

The questions presented on the Quiz are derived from the readiness check presented in the SRO.

Click on the Week 1 Quiz link after you have read the directions carefully.

The readiness check includes 15 questions in various formats including true/false and multiple choice. If you score 12 or below, please retake the exam. You may retake the exam as many times as you would like in order to achieve your desired score. Your highest score will be recorded. To retake the Quiz, click on “Take Test Again” (this does not appear as a hyperlink but works as a hyperlink when you click on the area).

To view the questions you answered correctly and incorrectly, click on your score in the “My Grades” area.

Discussion: Networking Opportunities

In this module, you begin laying the foundation for your academic and professional success. Your efforts begin with a vision that includes your own definition of success. Your vision may vary from those of your colleagues, but this does not mean you have to take these first steps alone.

Walden University and the College of Nursing also have a vision and mission, which include helping you to make your own vision a reality. Members of your new academic community, such as faculty, support teams, and fellow students, can also be helpful. Current practitioners and other member of the professional community can also help you to clarify your vision.

Also Read: NURS 6003 Discussion Strategies for Addressing Questions SAMPLE

This Module’s Discussion asks you to consider how the Walden mission and vision as well as the College of Nursing’s mission and vision apply to your professional and academic goals. You will also begin to identify individuals and teams who can help you along the way as you begin designing the “blueprint”—your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan—that will guide you toward your own vision for academic and professional success.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Walden and College of Nursing mission and vision statements, Walden’s goals and University Outcomes, and the MSN Program Learning Outcomes presented in this Module’s Learning Resources.
  • Reflect on your professional and academic goals as they relate to your program/specialization.
  • Consider how the information in these resources fit with your own goals and to your becoming a scholar-practitioner.
  • Also consider academic and professional individuals and teams with whom you may collaborate in support of your efforts as a student at the university and as a professional within your organization and career.

By Day 3 of Week 1

Post a brief introduction of yourself to your colleagues. Include an explanation as to how Walden’s vision, mission, goals, and social change initiatives relate to your professional and academic goals and to your becoming a scholar-practitioner. Also include an explanation for how the Walden MSN Program Outcomes and perspectives relate to your professional and academic goals and to your becoming a scholar-practitioner.

                                                               Introduction

I am Atabongawung, a male scholar in this University. I am a first year master’s student in MSN program. I am passionately pursuing my course with an intention of being helpful to my community. A student practitioner, the school programs allow my flexibility by allowing me to practice as I progressively learn. The institutional vision to create a community that judges knowledge to the degree that it can be put into application by the graduates to bring an immediate solution to existing societal challenges to improve the general global good. This vison applies to my professional practice and personal intention of bringing solutions to existing personal and societal issues, hence it is my most convenient institution.

Walden University provides diverse career opportunities to people and its mission is to transform the scholar practitioners in a way that they provide positive social change which rhymes with my personal intention of transforming my society. The goal of the institution motivates my existence here and reminds me of my goals as an individual. My personal professional goals are to bring a change to the existing societal health issues and a solution to health issues affecting individuals. These goals are motivated and empowered by the institutions perspectives and outcomes which are to focus and identify societal health needs, lead in the healthcare field, and increase commitment to learning. This has promoted my intention of becoming a scholar practitioner.

The practice of the nursing profession requires networking. Networking with other healthcare practitioners, and researchers who deal with health related issues. Networking helps in exploring and developing a strong support system within the healthcare community. It helps in discovering new specialties, positions, emerging diseases, and solutions to existing problems all meant for better service delivery to clients.
